Youth empowerment is a process where children and young people are encouraged to take charge of their lives. They do this by addressing their situation and then take action in order to improve their access to resources and transform their consciousness through their beliefs, values, and attitudes. The aim is to improve quality of life, and it is achieved through participation in youth empowerment programs. There are numerous models that youth empowerment programs use that help youth achieve empowerment and an American version gave birth to what has become Silicon Valley. With the way our world has shifted towards tech and the boom of Silicon Valley, the youth have become the key aspects of any economy. Now that we have a clear understanding what youth empowerment is all about let’s talk about how Econet recently launched a youth empowerment programme designed to support and equip young people with different skills sets, among them entrepreneurship training and mentorship by highly qualified professionals. They have named it Innovate Elevate Youth Conference.
By definition, to elevate is to move or raise to a higher place or position, and thus exactly what this programme is all about – elevating you to the next level by giving you the platform and opportunity to take control of every area of your life and make your dreams come true. Understanding Elevate – Youth Empowerment Programme
Elevate is a youth empowerment programme powered by Econet which was unveiled at an exceptionally well-organized and well attended youth event in Harare on the 10th of June , and is open to all Econet customers between the ages of 16 and 34 years old. The youth empowerment programme is designed to support and equip young people with different skills sets, among them entrepreneurship training and mentorship by highly qualified professionals. The last census revealed that in Zimbabwe youths who are below the age of 35 constitutes a mega 77% of the total population. Therefore, with such statistics, youths will greatly benefit from this youth empowerment programme.
Mr Lovemore Nyatsine, who is an Econet executive, spoke at the launch event, commended that the programme was an initiative of the youth and by the youth as it was born out of intense interactions and feedback with young people across the country over the past year.
“Today is the culmination of input from a sample of about 5,000 young people across the country over the past 12 months,” said Mr Nyatsine.
“We wanted to find out what it is the youth are looking for, what it is really they want”, he said, adding that the launch followed an exhaustive data analysis of the young people’s feedback which they used to come up with the programme.
Elevate consists of four pillars of opportunity for youth engagement
- Mix n Match – Allows young people take control of their communication needs by customising their Voice, SMS and Data usage plans.
- Spin n Shuffle – This pillar is entertainment-based. Therefore, creates a platform for aspiring young artists to bring out the musicians, dancers, vocalists, producers and comedians that are inside so many of them.
- Rise n Shine – It offers opportunities to develop and nurture young entrepreneurs between the ages of 16 to 34, and includes funding opportunities for those who sign up to the programme. Rise n Shine helps create employment by equipping young people with vocational training skills and entrepreneurial skills that enable them to start their own businesses and create employment.
- Learn n Grow – Provides opportunities for youth career guidance and mentorship through boot camps and related interventions.
